Typical nausea vs severe nausea

Mild nausea often improves after weeks 12–14. Hyperemesis gravidarum involves persistent vomiting, weight loss, and dehydration — it needs medical treatment.

Early eating strategies

  • Sip fluids slowly: water, coconut water, thin soup.
  • Dry foods before getting up: crackers, toast.
  • Avoid strong greasy smells; cool or warm foods may sit better than steaming hot dishes.
  • Six to eight very small meals.

Go to the hospital if

  • Cannot keep fluids down for more than 24 hours.
  • Very dark urine or little urination.
  • Dizziness, fast heartbeat, obvious weight loss.

Do not take someone else’s anti-nausea medication without prescription.
