Where does caffeine go?

Caffeine crosses the placenta; the fetus metabolizes it slowly. Moderation is the usual advice.

Reference limits

ACOG and NHS commonly cite up to about 200 mg caffeine per day in pregnancy — roughly one 12-oz brewed coffee, depending on strength. Energy drinks and some teas vary widely.

Common sources

  • Coffee (cà phê), espresso, Vietnamese iced coffee (often strong).
  • Black/green tea, matcha.
  • Cola, energy drinks, some chocolate.

Tips

  • Count all sources in a day.
  • Try half-caf, smaller cups, or later-morning only.
  • Avoid energy drinks with uncertain caffeine levels.
