Before pregnancy

CDC and ACOG recommend 400 mcg folic acid daily starting at least one month before conception where possible, continuing through early pregnancy (higher doses if clinically indicated).

Choosing a supplement

Look for folic acid/folate, iron, iodine, vitamin D, B12; avoid mega-doses of vitamin A as retinol. Bring the bottle to your first prenatal visit.

Unplanned pregnancy

Start a prenatal as soon as you know; do not wait for a “perfect” brand.

Additional supplements

Omega-3, extra iron, or herbal products only if your clinician recommends based on labs — more is not always better.
