Baby blues

Mood swings, crying, and fatigue in the first two weeks are common and often improve with rest and support.

Postpartum depression or anxiety

Persistent low mood, panic, intrusive thoughts, inability to care for self or baby, or loss of interest beyond two weeks — needs professional treatment. It is not a personal failure.

What can help

  • Tell your partner and clinician honestly.
  • Accept help with meals and sleep shifts.
  • Therapy and safe medications exist while breastfeeding — discuss options.
  • Peer support groups and hotlines locally.

Emergency

Thoughts of harming yourself or the baby — call emergency services or a crisis line immediately.
