What is gestational diabetes?
Glucose intolerance first recognized in pregnancy, often in the second or third trimester. ACOG recommends screening by risk. Diagnosis and glucose targets are set only by your clinician.
General eating principles
- Split meals: 3 mains + 2–3 snacks to avoid glucose spikes.
- Complex carbs: brown rice, oats, sweet potato — pair with protein and vegetables in the same meal.
- Limit sweets, industrial juices, and sugary drinks.
- Vegetables and fiber for fullness and digestion.
- Do not skip meals unless medically instructed.
Sample plate (illustration)
- ½–⅔ cup rice (individualized).
- Protein about palm-size (fish, chicken, tofu).
- Half plate vegetables, lightly cooked.
- Whole fruit after meals if allowed in your plan.
Activity
A short walk after meals may help glucose when approved — follow personal guidance.
Monitoring and follow-up
- Home glucose checks on your clinician’s schedule.
- Log meals when readings run high.
- Never change insulin or medication doses on your own.
Seek emergency care for
Extreme thirst, heavy urination, confusion, severe vomiting, or abdominal pain — possible complications.
