Energy needs while nursing
Breastfeeding increases calorie needs roughly 300–500 kcal per day above pre-pregnancy needs — individual variation is wide. Eat to hunger with nutrient-dense choices.
Priority nutrients
- Protein, calcium, iodine, vitamin A, B12, DHA.
- Iron if postpartum anemia was diagnosed.
- Fluids: drink to thirst; pale urine is a rough guide.
One-handed meal ideas
- Overnight oats, boiled eggs, peanut butter sandwiches.
- Rice boxes with chicken and vegetables prepared in advance.
- Soup (canh) in a mug with a straw-spoon.
Foods and drinks to consider carefully
- Caffeine in moderation; alcohol passes into milk — avoid or limit per clinician.
- Most babies tolerate normal maternal diet; elimination diets only if medically indicated.
When breastfeeding is hard
Lactation support, adequate rest, and medical review for pain or low output — nutrition alone does not fix all latch issues.
