Why jaundice happens

Bilirubin from broken-down red blood cells makes skin yellow. Many breastfed newborns have mild physiologic jaundice in the first week.

What parents can do

  • Feed frequently (8–12 times per 24 hours early on) to promote stooling and bilirubin removal.
  • Do not give water or sugar water unless prescribed.
  • Track wet diapers and weight with pediatric visits.

Treatment

Phototherapy in hospital if levels are high; follow medical advice — not uncontrolled sun exposure.

Do not self-treat

Herbal baths or stopping breastfeeding without clinician guidance can be harmful.
