What is BLW?

Baby-led weaning means offering soft, appropriately sized finger foods so the baby feeds themselves, while breast milk or formula remains the main nutrition source until about 12 months.

Advantages

  • Encourages self-regulation and motor skills.
  • Exposes babies to family textures and flavors early.
  • May reduce pressure to “finish the bowl.”

Safety

  • Wait until developmental readiness (around 6 months, sitting with support).
  • Offer soft sticks (steamed pumpkin, ripe banana) — not hard raw carrot coins.
  • Always supervise; learn infant choking first aid.
  • Avoid honey, whole nuts, whole grapes, and salty seasonings.

Combining approaches

Many families mix BLW with spoon-fed porridge (cháo). Consistency and patience matter more than a single “pure” method.
